Soffit Building in Basement

Hey everyone - I am building the soffits around the HVAC ductwork in my basement - I have been reading to use 3 inch screw. Is it ok to use the 3 inch nails I have been using for the framing or should I use the 3 inch screws? I am using 2x4's for the construction.

Thanks a lot.
