smooth stucco finish?
Is there any particular reason stucco is typically installed such that it has a cheesegrater-esque finish? We were touring a Japanese tea garden and saw that they had achieved a smooth finish on a stucco or similar substance on their outside siding. We really liked the look and are thinking about emulating it, but no one at the gardens knew what the substance was or how it was done.
We were thinking it might just be smoothed over stucco, but wanted to ask if anyone had seen such a thing before or knew what else it might be if not stucco.
For reference, it's the main building at the Hakkone Garden in Saratoga, CA.
hard to tell in the image, but those white panel areas are smooth, almost like plaster.
