Skylight Dilemma...
I have some skylights in a new cathedral ceiling. I have high-heel roof trusses so there is 19.5 inches from the roof sheathing to the drywall on the sloped ceiling. The trusses are on 24" centers. I have a well insulated and sealed box framed around each skylight (the trusses make up the sides). Two different drywall guys said they didn't recommend using drywall inside the boxes (from roof to cathedral) as the corners would surely crack. They recommended finishing like a window or door with wood all around. We like the "drywalled" look that you see in many skylight pictures. If it's not done with drywall, then how is it done? I can see the potential for cracking would be great perhaps if there was a tunnel from a flat ceiling...through an a sloped roof...but in this case, I would think there would be very little relative movement between the surrounding surfaces. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated! Thanks!!

We always drywalled them. Sounds to me like they didn't want to mess with hanging them, they are a PITA. We never had any problem with them cracking.

I've certainly drywalled them without problems, even through a flat ceiling. They are a PITA, though.

If they are concerned about the corners cracking, my question is:
What kind of framing do you have installed in the corners?

If there are no corners to attach the sheetrock to for the entire length of 21.5" (also figure in a chamber where temperatures can fluctuate and wood will expand and contract)...then, there is some cause for concern on their part.

Otherwise, there should be no problems drywalling the areas.
