Size of slab for covered patio, relative to size of the cover?

I'm putting up a covered patio and first will need to get the slab poured. I have a good idea of the size of the cover, so now I'm wondering how big to make the slab. Adjacent to the slab will be gravel on one side and pavers on the other two side. Here's the big question. Should the edges of the cover be over the patio slab, or overhang the gravel/pavers? The roof will be a shed type so water will drain off the one end (eave), but I guess there could be some small amount dripping from the two sides.

The slab should be smaller than the overhead, especially at the front - so rain water does not drain directly on the slab.

Just need the slab out far enough to cover the footings that your going to need to hold up the roof.
You need over hangs on all sides!
You need footings where the post are going to be.
Going to need 6 X 6'S not 4 X 4's.
Need post bases under every post so they do not rot out at the bottom.

Thanks for the excellent replies. After posting the question I was watching the rainwater drain off my shed and thinking the same thing about the patio overhangs.
