Question

Siding - what do you recommend?

I have an old house with asbestos siding shingles, asphelt paper, and wood plank siding. I would like to remove these asbestos siding shingles and cover with rigid insulation and vinyl siding. Do you recommend putting the insulation and vinyl siding right over the shingles, or should I remove them completely?

Thanks,

NO NO NO. You have to remove the Asbestos. Have you ever tried nailing trough that crap? It's impossible, you'll end up busting it up and having it all fall off anyway.

Get a permit of do it quick. Cities love to jack a guy when they are working with Asbestos.

Do yourself and anyone who helps you a favor and buy some chemical masks.

Yes, I have, and you're right. It's crap. In the photos, you can see where some other knucklehead tried to run cable through the wall, and it broke one of the shingles

I asked the home inspector when I was looking to buy the house. In my locale, I can bag it (double bag) and remove it myself (respirators on hand) and dispose of it at the dump. But a contractor needs permits to do it. Don't ask me why, but that's the law. I checked to verify that he was correct.

I have several with three or four sets of replacement filters. I've already gutted the lathe and plaster from my interior walls. I won't take any chances with the siding. Probably a project for early spring, as I have too many other things to do before winter.
