siding on furred wall, foam in the voids?

I furred out a 20x10 wall on my house with 1x's. I plan to apply vinyl siding soon but was wondering if I should fill the voids in between the 1x's with some sort of stiff insulation/foam to give the siding a nice backer.

The 1x's are 16" o.c.

I Would not worry about giving the siding a backing if insulation is not an issue. 16 centers will be fine.

well the vinylsiding.org manual says:

"when installing furring strips, take appropriate measures to establish a smooth continuous surface"

and it also said that you can't just apply it on bare studs... which is sort of like floating it on the furring strips, no?

Well then, put some 3/4" Styrofoam in there and let's get on with it.
