Should I insulate this? (pic)

See pic attached. I have a cape cod. My father insists I should extend the vent cutes all the way to the soffit and insulate the roof all the way to the soffits so the "Storage area" doesn't blow cold air into the main room. I'm concerned about cutting off airflow/creating mold. Suggestions?

I have the same setup, mine is storage also
Everything is insulated & I ran the rafter vent to the soffit
Also sheetrock installed
The warmer the storage area, the warmer the room

Cool, how did you deal with the part of the insulation where the roof meets the floor, just staple it to the corner? Any mildue issues near the soffitt and the insulation?

"I'm concerned about cutting off airflow/creating mold. Suggestions?" Unless the storage area is heated or at least the same temperature as the room, the moisture will condense on the insulation being colder due to the incoming air above. OR, the best way is to insulate the walls of the room/attic and install some house wrap to prevent the attic air from wind-washing the exposed wall insulation. If you read all baffle instructions, it says leave a 1" gap between ends for removal of trapped moisture: http://www.adoproducts.com/duro.html

.Air seal the attic space from all heated areas: http://www.rd.com/how-to-seal-attic-...icle18158.html

Sealing the joist bays and attic door: http://www.simplesavings.coop/simple...ee%20walls.pdf

If an older balloon framed house: http://www.wag-aic.org/1999/WAG_99_baker.pdf

This should keep you busy until Dave answers your question.

Be safe, Gary
