Not much shear strength in a 0.12 -- (7d) nail that is 3" long, perhaps 0.148? Or 0.161? Let us know if you find that diameter/length from Grip-rite; http://www.grip-rite.com/flash/book/bin/index.html#/16

And, welcome to the forums!

Gary

The shear strength of a 10d is a lot more than the wood that it's shoved into.

If you have ever banged a stud out that was end nailed, you would have seen that the nails bend...not shear off. The wood is giving which allows the nail to bend and pull out.
