Question

shed/garage foundation questions

location: somewhere between richmond and philly on the easter seaboard. frost line cca. 3 ft below.

Q1: how deep should i go with the footing ? was thinking 4 ft but is that an overkill ?

Q2: if i went 4 ft below, is it OK for DWV, water supply, and electric conduit to punch through the footing about 3 ft below and 1 ft above from the bottom ? or should the footing's integrity not be compromised and they should go underneath it ?

The required frost depth in your area is set by the code, but can be adjusted by the local building official. It is best to check. You can't overkill frost depth on a footing...4' will get you by most anywhere.

You can punch through a trench footing or foundation wall below grade with DWV pipes, provided you plan ahead. Don't pour the pipe in place. When you pour the wall, install a PVC sleeve in the wall for the smaller DWV pipe to pass through. That way subtle movements in the wall or trench footing won't negatively affect the drain. I'd also make sure that you don't get too close to the top or the bottom, 12" is fine.

You cannot run a pipe THROUGH a spread footing (like a 16x8" footing as commonly installed for homes). In that case, you'd need to go under it.
