sealer on concrete

I'm looking for advice about concrete counters. We've had our counters for 4 years now. The sealer is starting to come off on the most used areas. We left them grey and now I'm thinking of staining them. How do I go about removing the remainder of the sealant so I can stain??? I can't seem to find any info on this issue.
