screwing drywall

what's the best way to screw the 4x8 drywall in walls and in ceiling(soffit)? I'm installing it perpendicular to the studs. Should I put screws on every stud or every other stud? Should 4 screws (2 on both ends/edges and 2 in the middle, basically every 12 inches from end to end) be enough?

Me too and screws are cheap if you buy them in bulk. You do not want to skimp or you will pay the price later.

Per US Gypsum's installation instructions, .50 inch ceiling panels should be nailed every 7" or screwed every 12" and fastened "to all joists or perimeter framing" at a span no greater than 16" if installed parallel or 24" if installed perpendicular to the joists. (You can install .50 inch panels parallel to the joists by using USG's "sag resistant " panels.)

Like some others here, I use approximately 6" spacing for screws at panel edges "just to be safe".
