Screening the crawl space vents

We recently purchased a 62-year-old home. The previous owner had "blocked" all the crawl space openings from the outside, which is of course not a good idea as moisture can't escape from the crawl space through the vents. They used large pieces of wood with cinder block propped against them.

But we also don't want to leave the vents wide open; they are 15" x 21" in size and fairly large critters can crawl under there. Worst of all, they could die down there and cause stench to waft into the house.

So what I want to do is remove the obstruction from the vents and get some screening up. I don't want to block too much of the airflow with the screen, but I do want to get the screening up. I don't even know where to begin, or what to use. (The home's exterior is mostly rock, with a little brick surrounding the crawl space vents.)

Any ideas or tips on what to do about this would be appreciated.

Make a 2x2 frame the size of the opening and then attach some 1/8"hole or 1/4" hole metal screen to the back and then attach a 1x2 to the back so the screen is sandwitchd between the 2x2 and 1x2.. Then you could either wedge them in or fasten them with tapcons.

If you have central heat/air (ducted system) and no dirt basement or crawl spaces and your basement is dry, I would leave them blocked as they will just let moist air into your dry house and cause mold and rot.
