what do you use to secure them to the floor joist?

There are nail down clips and special staplers/staples for that. Have then in the big box stores.

Coax clips with the small pin nails attached. Find them in the same aisle as wire nuts & romex staples. Buy a Arrow cable stapler (@ big box store). Its a great tool to have around, as you will find many future uses for it.
You can hang Christmas lights, tie up plants in the garden, and if used in conjunction with zip ties hang tools etc.
The only limit is your imagination!
