roof not on yet and a whole lotta rain

we are in the third week of constructing our new home all the walls are up and the first floor is complete but before the crew could put up the roof trusses and sheathing over the second floor we got hit with severe winds and rain. i went out today and of course without shingles or even tar paper up the construction was drenched. its going to be a two story house and all the water is pooling on the first floor and dripping into the basement. not a whole lot of water but more is expected over night. the basement floor hasnt been concreted yet, it is still sand and soggy. i met with the plumber today for his rough-in. is there anything i should be concerned with? is there anything i could do? i didnt know if i should buy a squeegee and go over the floor or just let mother nature dry things up. of course im concerned about any long term damage that may occur.

I am in the same situation. I also have a house with no roof and we are getting torrential rains. I spent the day putting tarps on the (flat) roof. Didn't seem to help much. Water is pouring onto me first and second floor. My foyer had over an inch of water inside. I swept the water away, but couldn't keep up. I was told that the water won't hurt my osb unless it gets drenched like this several times. The roofer is supposed to be out at the end of this week. I am in lower Michigan, by the way.

Your contractor should be covering the construction or drilling hokes in the subfloor to keep water from sitting on the subfloor. If it sits long enough it will lose strength and you will be replacing it.

I was told not to drill holes in the floor, as it would allow water to enter the interior of the osb and contaminate the glue. My interior dried pretty well today, what with all the wind and all. The roofer is supposed to start on Friday.

Say what!!! :D OSB is OSB and water is water add the too and OSB will contaminate the water. Letting water sit on OSB is more detrimental than popping some holes.

Also once your house is dried in start running some heat before the isulation is in. That should get any water that is soaked in to evaporate.

thanks for the info, i went out to the house today. all was dry but looking outside now it looks like there in an inch of snow outside. my delima is this, we are waiting to do the trusses because we need a power line moved by our energy company which is too close to the house for the framers comfort. the framers dont feel comfortable with their equipment coming that close to the lines. we were on the ball ahead of time and had the energy company come out for the line move. we paid them and were scheduled last monday for the line move. they did some work on the thursday prior and on sunday we got hit with high winds. they called monday morning to let us know of the delay due to power outages. they gave me no reschedule guess whatsoever. i called and havent heard back yet to see if the have any idea yet. and of course the framers want to finish so they can be paid, an we all want the house to be buttoned up due to weather and we'd like to go on. so right now we are frustrated and are at the energy companies mercy.

GOOD NEWS! just left the energy company and they already had a crew enroute to move the lines. i left a message for the framers and they should start back tomarrow. I also found out that framing is rated to withstand weather for so many weeks before you should really be concerned. i was told four weeks.

Plywood soaks up water more than OSB, but it will more than likely recover better once the water's gone. Have you actually seen any swelling?

If you pop holes in the OSB, the exposed edges can simply be treated with exterior paint to help it retain it's water shedding capabilities. Does your OSB have a stamp on it that says 'Exposure 1'? If so, relax.

I spray water seal on my plywood decks, does anybody know if it's worth while putting it on OSB?

hi folks. i have no advice to offer, but wanted to offer my condolences... living in the pacific wet west, my biggest fear is construction in the weathers. hopefully we will be started and DONE next summer...
