roof for new garage


I am building a new garage it is 33widex38 long I am getting the block layed up. the roof can i just install rafters and not ceiling joist also it will have a metal roof with perlins,, maybe use coral ties just asking may want to put lift in later. Thanks Raybob

33', are they trusses? Cj's will not span 33', unless I'm missing something here...TJI's? What is on the plans? Collar ties are for wind, not structural. Moving the cj up off the plate requires a SE for the bolt/fasteners required.

Welcome to the Forum!

to eliminate ceiling joists one of two things must occur:

1. a structural ridge beam must be installed capable of supporting 1/2 of the roof load
2. rafter ties (ceiling joists are a specific type of rafter tie) must be installed within the lower 1/3 of the rafter length at a minimum of 48" on centers. of course you have to take a reduction in the strength of your rafters when using rafter ties.

the reduction for rafter ties is shown below the table
