Default Roof frame design that allows for most use of 2nd floor space

I’m putting some ideas together for a small home (26 x 28). The roof would be a gable roof pitched front to back (26’ span) with one or two 6’ dormers front and back. The construction here is all 8” concrete block with intermittent & corner 12” columns. Standard single story requires an 8” x 12” belt course (or ring course) reinforced with 4 lengths of 5/8 steel with ¼” stirrups 12” O.C.

The first floor belt of a two story home would have a 14” or 16” belt similarly designed (sometimes they may call for 6 lengths of 5/8 steel.

The roof would be framed with 2x6 24" o.c.

I would like to:
  • <LI class=MsoNormal style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1">Put a 9/12 pitch roof on this structure <LI class=MsoNormal style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1">Exclude the ceiling joist <LI class=MsoNormal style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1">Tie a floor into the belt course using 2 x 12
  • Put the collars at 8’

My question is will the rafters spread? If so what can I do to prevent rafter spread? Would an 8” x 16” or more belt course help? I could buttress the columns?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
