rim joist issue

just started a 28' by 17.5' bedroom addition and was wondering what one does when you have a rim joist that is longer (2x12x28') than is available (2x12x24')? I figured that I would butt the ends and use a metal plate to lock the two pieces together. What's the normal practice for this situation?
thanks

Split it at a joist if you're using dimensional lumber and in between joists if using i-joists. Then use another piece of rim joist to go between the joists to act as blocking and keep the rim joist straight.

Did you get an answer to your question? I have the same type of problem.
