I am working on a room in an old farm house . It is a single story addition and about 100yrs old. 14' long and 18' wide. Span is 18' and run is 9'. It is a 7/12 pitch.
I took down the ceilings and discovered that there are only 4 rafters, 36" centers, no ridge board or beam just rafters tacked together at the peak.
I want to install a ridge beam 14' long x 3 -2x12's and add 2x10 rafters on 16" centers. My questions are:
1- Can I install it under the existing rafters at the peak and into the end bearing walls.
2- How do I find the measurement for the birds mouth ( if that is what it is called in this application ) for both ends as part of the new rafters will be on top of the beam and part will be resting on the sides because of the difference in width from old to new rafters.
3-Should I attach the 2x10 collar ties right under the beam or lower.
I will be leaving out the ceiling joists and using the collar tie for a flat section of ceiling. vaulted.
I know a lot will say get an engineer but that won't happen. There will be no inspection or permit way out here and the owner is way to cheap to hire one anyway.
Thanks ..sorry if to long.
