Residing questions

Hi,

I'm going to be tearing off old aluminum siding and replacing with vinyl starting this spring. Couple questions:

1. I plan on installing 1/2" rigid foam over the existing 1x sheathing. I can only work on this project over the weekends, so it might take most of the summer. How long can I leave the insulation exposed before UV damage becomes an issue?

2. Last year, I installed a few new construction windows on one side of the house. I peeled back the aluminum and nailed directly to the sheathing. The windows protrude 1 1/2" past the nailing flange which should work with my 1/2" of insulation plus 3/4" J channel. I'm not sure how to properly flash the window now that I'm adding insulation over the nailing flange - any ideas?

Thanks for the help.

Residing questions

The video is a good link for flashing new construction.

The issue I have is that I'm not in a new construction situation. Windows on one side of the house are already installed (and flashed to the existing sheating properly). I'm going to be stripping all the siding and adding a layer of 1/2" rigid. How do you flash the window after adding the insulation? The flange would be buried behind the insulation at that point.

if you can, slip a piece of tyvek or tar paper under the flange before you foam, install the foam under the window 6-8'' lower than the window
lap the paper over the installed foam then fill in to the bottom of the window over the paper dont try to cut the foam to tight so any moisture can freely escape between the seams of the foam

basically your weaving the widow flashing between the foam

this is the reason you want your drainage plane on top of the foam
not under it
