Residing Early 90's Ranch Home

This weekend we are going to be residing our home. Just to see how our house was built, I took a chunk of siding off.. Underneath that I found 1" Pink XPS (Assuming) hardboard insulation. I cut a chunk of that out to see what was behind it.. and I found my wall studs and insulation.. No OSB on the exterior of the house (except in the corners where they placed 4x8's. Now, I have been looking around my windows, and found that underneath them, there is just the pink 1" insulation, and no OSB, and to the sides, there is Insulation, and then OSB under it. There is no visible flashing on the outer side of the pink insulation around my windows. We haven't had any problems with our siding, or any kind of leakage with the house, we just don't like the color of the old stuff... Can we just take the old stuff off, and put the new stuff on.. or should we go a few steps further and do a house wrap over the insulation.. What do you guys recommend?

Yes, there are people here who know about siding.

Yeah, some kind of "house-wrap". (Tyvek)

I am going to be replacing the current vinyl with new vinyl. The house wrap would go over the current pinkboard right?

Yes, the "house-wrap" would go over the "pink-board".
Make sure you tape the seams.
Use long enough nails - 1 inch insulation board - 2" to 2 1/2" galvanized/
aluminum - to hang the siding.
Float the siding - don't nail it too tight.
Keep the nails centered in the "nail-slots" of the siding panels.

Also, when removing the old siding, am I supposed to remove all of the old nails, or just hammer them in?

If you've got foam insulation, and you try to pull the nails; you'll have to pad/cushion your pry-bar/hammer, so you don't crush/damage the foam.
When we do this, (and, I know this sounds like overkill!) -
we caulk all the nail holes in the foam.
It's fun!

Sounds like fun - but I only have a 3 day window to get this house completed :/

Since I will be putting Tyvek over the foam, wouldn't caulking all the holes actually be overkill?

Yes, it would!
We do this on other peoples house's - so, we believe in "overkill"!
However, you are right - it is overkill: since, you're installing house-wrap.
Just a suggestion!
Follow that guide!
(Also, probably OK, to just pound the nails in - we do that too).
