Repointing Painted Brick

I have an old farm house (100 years or so) and the brick needs repointing but 25 years ago my Dad thought it would be a good idea to paint the brick instead. Now I oen the place and I want to repoint the brick but my neighbour says I cant cause its been painted. Is this right?

Repointing Painted Brick

You are going to have to remove the paint in the areas where you plan to repoint, morter will not stick to paint...for very long

Repointing Painted Brick

So I guess I will have to get the house sand blasted to remove the paint, since the whole house needs to be repointed. I am guessing that sandblasting and repointing isnt goin to be cheap I might as well just get the house stuccoed or will stucco not stick to paint either?

Repointing Painted Brick

The bricks falling out and the motar missing between the bricks. It should have been repointed 40 years ago , long before it was painted.

Repointing Painted Brick

It certainly should not have been painted. If you sandblast the paint off, you should also use a sealer afeter repointing, since the sandblasting will most likely ruin the brick.
