Replacing Wooden RSJ with a metal one?

Hi All,

I have moved into a house with a kitchen that has been extended. The opening in the external wall appears to be supported by a wooden beam and it has a vertical wooden post supporting it right in the middle of the opening. I want to remove the wooden post but have concerns it must be supporting the beam.

Details:

Opening is 2430mm wide.

Questions:
  • Are wooden beam's supporting an external wall like this common?
  • Who should I call to have a look at it to determine if the post is supporting the wooden beam.
  • How expensive do people think it would be to swap wooden beam out for metal RSJ with no support in the middle?

Thanks in advanced for any help on this subject!

Paul

I'm confused.
You say you already have a RSJ (Rolled Steel Joist) beam up there?
If so, where does the wooden beam enter the picture?

Sorry I mucked up the title it's just a wooden beam up there not an RSJ. I got a bit "RSJ" Happy when typing the title!

At least you knew what a RSJ was.

Ok rather than picking up I made a mistake in the title can anyone help?

Or at least help with who I need to call to find out if it is structural? Do I really need to call a structural engineer or would a builder be adequate?

Costing to swap out a wooden beam for an RSJ must be fairly simple.

...the fact that the post is there at all tells me that its load bearing. Your builder should be able to tell and offer solutions for removing it.

Thanks Penny,

Thats the conclusion I've made too. I'm calling around the builders today.

Anyone like to suggest how much they think it should cost?
