Replacing two 9x7 garage door with one wide door

Hi there, we are looking at fixing up the garage at our house we bought. It has been neglected for years (just like many other things we've found as we've been remodeling). I am ripping off the siding and going down to the frame inside and out. As part of this process, we thought about getting rid of those two doors and installing a 16x7 or similar in their place. Looking at these photos, does it look like the header is strong enough or would I need a new header?

Obviously you can't give an estimate, but are we talking replacement in the hundreds or thousands? To have somebody come in and put in a new header

That sounds cheap....I have a 18' PSL beam for the garage door header....the beam alone was almost $400.....

That looks like a lot of work......

Obviously the header has supports underneath it in the center. You cannot take those out or the header will definitely fail. You can always install the proper size header for that. You have to have someone design one for you. An architect or engineer can do this.

Impossible to answer. Especially over the internet. Anyone who gives you a ridiculous ballpark or any other numbers is joking with you or just wrong. Read the sticky about this. Just simply have a couple contractors come over and tell you.

Replacing two 9x7 garage door with one wide door

We recently replaced our garage door with what looks like a French door. Since the back of our house is driven up to & looks like the front, we have all French doors now. We did everything on the internet, & the guys came up & installed it. We are very pleased, no problems, it looks great, & it has been in place about 3 years so far.

Now you know the rules. Besides giving YOUR ballpark numbers over the internet IS ridiculous. Take it anyway you want.

That's going to take something substantial, you not only need a header to span a 16' opening but one along the wall supporting the roof load. ND- North Dakota? Man, I hate to even think how much weight of snow might be sitting on that roof, especially with the relatively shallow pitch of it. I spent several years in ND one winter and that weather is not to be trifled with, I'd be hesitant to go to a 16' just from wind concerns.

You are going to have to get a SE's opinion, this is not a simple "tear it out and throw up a beam" job.

Just hire a contractor to do it. When he hands you the bill - if it's more than $800, just tell him that Hammer450R from the internet said it should only be around $800.
