Replacing soffit tucked behind brick veneer.
i am in the process of replacing badly damaged fascia, soffit and all the support framing that the fascia and soffit are fastened to.
for the record im planning on installing hardie fascia and vented soffit.
problem is that about 90% of the house is brick veneer, and apparently the soffit and 2x4 framing were installed prior to the brick in such a way that the back of the soffit is effectively inaccessible to even the smallest of hands, let alone my beat up nail gun.
the installation requirements for hardie soffit include a requirement that all edges be nailed every 8". so i assume i should rule out trying to nail some sort of F channel piece to the framing behind the brick? i couldn't find any info regarding whether or not its appropriate to support hardie soffit products with f channel type pieces.
my other thought was to just not worry about extending the soffit all the way flush to the existing wall framing, and to simply join the soffit framing that will run from the rafters to the existing wall with perpendicular pieces of 2x4 positioned such that i could still nail the soffit on all edges while still being able hide the nails and the top of the brick with a piece of hardie trim for a frieze board.
however, is not extending the soffit boards all the way to the wall framing appropriate? it seems less than ideal, but thats all i can come up with that would more or less follow the installation guidelines.
Thanks, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
you can end it anywhere you want, just install blocking where needed
i like your idea of a frieze board:thumbsup:
thanks for the input, i appreciate it.
is this not a common problem? ive been searching for similar installations, but have been unsuccessful. i would think that just about everyone with an older brick veneer home with soffits would have to face this at some point.
usually the brick is brought up higher and the finished soffit butts into it
