Replacing the Sill on a Double hung Window

First time home owner here. 63 Year old house, should keep me busy. First project is to replace the rotten wood sills on the window. I believe the windows would be called double-hung.

This will give you an idea of the damage:





I have read the basics on doing this. Any suggestions before I tackle this? Does the sill genrally come out pretty easy?

I won't be taking ownership for another month I'm just already getting excited about it!

You've got your work cut out for you.

Well they usually don't come out easily, unless they are totally rotten.

Remove the interior sill.

Remove the aluminum storm.

Then use a spreader clamp on the inside of the two jambs, from left to right. Do not over push the clamp, it is just to prevent the sides from coming in in the next step.

Using a sawsall cut out about 3" in the center. Then pull the left and right pieces to the center until they come free.

There will be nails going up into the side jambs. If there is room you can hammer the old sill down and cut the nails with the sawsall.

Once the old piece is out cut a new one. It will most likely look like a real fat T, so you will have to slide it in from the outside.

Then using a finish nailer nail the new jamb in. Make sure to caulk and reinsulate before replacing the interior sill.

Also take note that the inside and outside edges of your sill will need to have a bevel on them. Match the new bevel to the old.
