Question

Replacing closet doors (PICS)

Here is a corner of my closet, it is from a 50's home. I want to put in bypass mirror doors. The current opening is less than 78". I am wondering why this closet was built this way, off the floor. The other closets in the bedrooms are the same way.

If I remove the framing of this opening and try to lower the floor of the closet so that it is level with the floor, I am wondering what I will find inside. Is it doable without some major demolition?

You can certainly remove the platform and you will likely find unfinished sub floor underneath.

That's what I am hoping to find, I wonder though if the sub-floor inside the closet is at the same level as the room floor.

I would just about bet the farm on it.

Of course someone could have gotten lazy and run some tubing through there.

In all of the bedrooms?

But you’re right, you never know.

I looks like an old house and the closets were styled after even older style wardrobes from pre-closet days.

A friend of mine had three closets like this in an older house he purchased.

He was able to remove the buildup, repaint the newly exposed areas, and lay cedar plank flooring in each in the course of a single weekend.
