replace hand ued support beam with a laminate support beam
I am restoring a 1930 cape style house built on a sand floor with a cynder block four foot crawl space. One of the original support beams that was probably from an old barn is starting to show some dry rot. I want to replace or supplement this beam. I thought it would be least expensive to simply add a laminate beam next to the old beam and dig footings and add steel lally columns to to sprrort the new beam. This would eliminate the cost of removing the old beam and also keep the original support in place. Doesthis sound like the correct approach?
