Repeated loud thumps?

We are in upstate NY with the coldest winter in 10 years. (my second year in the house).
There have been several loud thumps; rather like a duck flying into the house. I have walked around and found no dead ducks, or anything else wrong.

We have one large and one small deck made of interlocking PVC boards. My theory is that boards are contracting in the cold unevenly, and buckling/shifting against either each other or the deck base.

My old house had noises from framing shifting and that was sharp cracking noises; this is heavy thumping, so I don't think it is framing shifting.

Does this make sense or should I keep looking for a problem?

Are your neighbours hearing it also? Try googling "frost quake".

Roller,

I live in northeast Ohio. When it gets real cold, say below 15 degrees F, I get some pretty loud bang/ thuds from where my deck is attached to the house. I think it's just what you are saying, some kind of uneven contraction issue. Doesn't seem to hurt anything.

My wife says the noise that woke her last night had to be an ice quake; though the noises I heard (which might not have been the same thing) seemed to be coming from the deck.

No oil heat...

A friend of mine can always tell when the outside temp drops to 5*. There are two loud, distinct bangs that emanate from his house. He has lived there for 25 years and still has not figured out where they come from.

I live in Plattsburgh- the bangs have been constant all winter. Some are frost quakes, some are structural shifting due to extreme temperature change. They happen the most when it's a warmer sunny day and then gets below zero at night.

The worst they might do is crack your driveway or sidewalks. You can always go up in the attic with a flashlight for reassurance nothing is cracking or breaking.
