I just bought a house and there is a gigantic fireplace smack in the middle of the house. With the trend nowadays being the open concept layout, I have been toying with the idea of removing it completely. Although I do like the idea of having a fireplace (especially wood burning), I feel that this will increase the overall appearance of the house.
There is a fireplace on both sides of the 'mass' on the two sides of the wall as well as another fireplace in the unfinished basement. My first question is, since it is such a massive structure, do you think that this is integral to the structure of the house?
I would love to hear anyone's ideas as to how to proceed with this.
I know MY brick wall where I have the chimney and wood stove is part of the structural support here, and it looks to be your case as well.
I'd be reluctant to attempt to remove the fireplaces, more tempted to use them in winter to reduce heating costs.
