I have a small bathroom (about 5' X 7') we have drywall damage in the tub area and floor damage between the tub and toilet. I am planning on gutting the entire bathroom, even the flooring and putting in a new tub with a surround (not tile) and tile flooring. I am going to use green sheet rock for the walls and ceiling but I am not sure what I should do with floor. I know I need to lay Durock on the floor but I'm not sure what I should use for the subfloor material. Also what kind of paint would you recomend for the walls and ceiling?
I will let the real experts give a more detailed response, but one point: You mention using greenboard on the ceiling. This is tricky, as I learned recently when remodeling my own bath. The manufacturers' specs say not to use greenboard on the ceiling unless either (a) your joists are 12" o.c. or less, or (b) you use 5/8" greenboard, which is not the stuff readily available at most home centers. Basically, the green stuff is weaker than regular drywall and more prone to sagging -- therefore you either need the thicker stuff or closer-spaced joists. Otherwise, just use regular drywall on the ceiling.
