refacing brick fireplace

I would like to know the pros and cons for using mesh on a 20 year old brick fireplace. I want to use mortar to update the fireplace which has 70's written all over it. Please provide suggestions etc. Thank you in advance for your assistance

When you say that you want to "add mortar", are you saying that you just want to plaster over the entire veneer, making it smooth?
