Redoing Shutters

We live in a reproduction of a Queen Anne transition farm house. Built in the 80s, they used vinyl shutters. As much as I would love to buy all new wood ones, I'm afraid it would be way more than I want to spend. I have enough shutter dogs for all my windows, but I am afraid hanging the existing vinyl shutters on the window frame to create that authentic, layered look, may appear strange.

Any insights or ideas?
