redo outside of house

I need some suggestions on what to redo the outside of our house with. We live in the woods, we have a board fence surrounding our yard and a iron gate at the entrance. We have a wood frame home, currently with vinyl siding. We want to make it stronger with brick or stone, etc. We need to decide now what type of posts to use for the front porch, and what to put on the walls under the porch area. My husband wants to brick but i like natural materials that would blend in with our surrounding and keep that rustic look. What choices do we have for the porch posts and how they should look.

Concerning your porch, take a look at my project. I am building one that spans the backside of my house. Hopefully it will give you a few ideas...

I hope that ledger board on the house is a 2x & not 3/4" trim
I've also never heard of anyone adding rock salt to cement
Doesn't seem like a good idea to add a corrosive material to a cement footing
