raising ceiling

want to convert garage into bedroom. if ceiling joists are set on top plate the ceilings will be very low. can joists be nailed to rafters higher up or do they have to sit on wall. want to go with tray ceiling look, so if there are any other options, let me know.

thanks

It really depends on the situation.

what are some of the variables it depends on?

4/12 pitch
12' hor. span
2x6 rafters

You're basically talking about adding collar ties, and using them to hang drywall. I can't imagine why that would be a problem, but I'm not a builder, so maybe I'm missing something.

Sounds like a pretty minor change to me. I'd like to hear what the complicating factors could be.

I'm looking to do this on the 2nd floor of my house. I only have 6 1/2' ceiling height. The attic is conventional birds mouth framing. I was going to add support to the collar ties with the wall studs between the rooms.

1/3 the height is allowable by most standards.
