Rafters

My roof rafters are only 2+6s. Can I sister 2+8s right next to each one to make room for insulation n lights n would I need to lay new rafters on top of wall plate n other end nailed to ridge beam

What is your location and how much insulation are you considering to install? Are you providing for ventilation? I ask as 2 X 8s if sistered along side the 2 X 6s and up against the sheathing, may not give you enough space. What is the span and pitch? do you have room to construct an independent frame that is beneath your existing roof rafters? Recessed lights in a vaulted ceiling are never energy efficient.

I'm on Long Island New York. It's one story ranch. My kitchens vaulted already. But what I really wanted to see if I could do was to get 2+8s n place them on top of wall plate at bottom of ceiling. N then instead of nailing them to the 2 by 6 I wanted to make a new ridge beam underneath my old one n this way my pitch would not be as my old one but it would give me plenty of room for insulation n lights. The span from wall to ridge is about 14 ft. Yes I plan on leaving room for air travel

So basically at bottom of roof I would have 8 inches n at top I would have about a foot depending on how much of a pitch I give it. Just wondering if this would b able to work. I would build new ridge beam under old one n I'm planning on bracing it up good
