Question about popcorn ceiling

So, I realize that people call textured ceilings "popcorn" ceilings. But what I am unclear about is whether "popcorn" ceilings refer to a specific type of texturing or just all textures in general on ceilings. For instance, in my house I have a texture on some ceilings but Its a half-circle brush pattern. I've also seen other kinds as well. What constitutes as popcorn.

Would this be a popcorn ceiling

Lots of different textures, but what you are asking about is acoustical "popcorn" texture. Comes in a few different sizes, blown by a hopper or pressure fed gun, very fast, very cheap, hides all kinds of imperfections, and is really out of style. We haven't blown one in 2 years or more. Hand troweled textures are in, especially in custom homes. Our spec homes get a blown on thinned mud which is "knocked down" by a wide knife. Another fast, good looking, and inexpensive texture.

Popcorn is the texture with little styrofoam balls that constitute it. the texture you are talking about sounds like a troweled on application. Is it sandy? Is it like drywall mud? You could have a stomped ceiling which consist of drywall mud stomped on the ceiling using a round or oval brush.

Yes that is popcorn. It is a medium texture (most common) And it appears that you had some sort of water problem? It also appears that there is a bonding issue?

Ha, I didn't even notice the damage in the picture. That's not my house, I just grabbed that pic of the net to give myself an idea. I dont' have any popcorn ceilings, i was just curious about it for personal knowledge.
