Putting new t1-11 on a garage. Can I just attach it to the old siding?

I am looking to put up new T1-11 to replace the sides of a detached garage (750 sqft) as the plywood siding on it is beginning ot deteriorate.

A friend of mine told me to cut the bottom 6", check for termite damage and then either attached the T1-11 directly to the drywall through to the studs. I was going to put a layer of caulk between the too as a moisture barrier. the detached garage is built like a shed, but with a concrete floor.
