Putting a door into a small frame? How can I fit the door?

I have a small storage area, just a control panel for a sprinkler system, main water valves, etc... The opening in the framing is 25 1/2" x 69 1/2"

How can I put a door in this? Should I just by a pre-assembled door and rip it to size, cut down the framing and nail it into place? Or should I just build a door out of raw materials? I can put a pre assembled door into framing built for it, but I need some help with this door.

Thanks!

Why not just reframe the opening?

I initially wanted to keep the opening small, but after looking at the numbers, the door would only be 4 inches wider and a few inches taller. Whoever built it last time did a horrible job too.

Nothing is level :|

I'll just re-build it. As quickly as this thread was started it has ended lol

That's the way my whole house was framed. I think they custom made every door and frame.
The door jams were made out of 3 pieces of wood. was closit doorway was so short you had to duck down to see what was on the shelve.
There was no headers.

Putting a door into a small frame? How can I fit the door?

This is for a closet in a small basement, I just found out a regular door is 30"x80" ... the doors in my basement are 73-3/4" I am just going to knock out the old studs, stud the wall so it is just as wide as a normal 32" rough opening, and have a door cut for me.

unless there is a better way?

No matter what this door has to be no taller than 74" or it wont fit. I am very green to construction and I would really like to use a pre-hung door as I want this job to come out perfect. Do you guys think I should just do the rough opening and have a pre-cut pre-hung door ordered to the home depot?

HD maybe limited in what odd size doors they could order for you. Is there a millworks/door shop near you. Cutting a standard prehung door that much would put your bottom hinge really close to the ground, where as using blank stock door jambs the hinges could be routed in where they'd make more sense for the door height.

Putting a door into a small frame? How can I fit the door?

The whole reason I am doing this project is to learn more about construction. I was able to pound a group of (3) 2x4s to the side a whole inch. We have a plumb door frame now The contractors for this wall suck.

I am going to go buy material for the jambs and top, I am confident I can cut it up myself. I will shop around for a slab that I can rip and cut to my dimensions that will still look good, then I'll install the hardware I have from my old door. I don't have a router, but I think I can do it right with a chisel and some time.

I'll post pix of the fail/win after I buy some parts

You can do it
As for the hinges, routers just make it easier/quicker. Nothing wrong with a good sharp chisel and a little more time

A 24" door should be very close to fitting that opening

Where can I find a 24" door? Are they pre-hung?

We can get 24" and even 18" in prehung here, Find a good lumber yard (usually not a big box)
