pull down attic stairs

The previous owner left a pull down attic stairs unit in the work shop out back. What's the best way to install these? Looks like the hole has been prepped and reinforced (joist/header) in preparation for install. What hardware should be used? There weren't any instructions or hardware left behind.

Thanks.

So you have a roughed-in opening for the stairs to fit into? Are the stairs complete, aside from not having any fasteners to attach them into the rough opening?

General answer...This isn't the place for sheetrock screws. You need to use screws or bolts that can take the stress of someone's weight. Large diameter wood screws or lag screws would probably be appropriate. Be sure that whatever you use, the hardware will clear the thickness of the head of the fastener.

KC,
yes, the opening is ready and the stairs are complete. Already has cover panel attached and pull down rope. It looks like one of those kits that come ready to install. Don't have any hardware though. I'm figuring 4 inch lag bolts but not sure. I know Lowes sells these units, maybe I'll go there and see what comes in the kit/what I'm missing.

i had a similar problem with no hardware or instructions with one i picked up for our old home, i used 1/2" lag screws and never had a problem.
(but "I" did the cutout and reinforcements too...)

No doubt, lags will be strong enough to hold it. Even 1/4" lags would be plenty strong. 4" might be overkill. I think 3" would be ideal, provided you're screwing into 3" of wood.

You can probably find detailed install instructions on the manufacturer's web site.

You might want to double check the length... be sure the stairs are the right size for the ceiling height where you plan to install. ( You can cut off for proper fit....short...well.... it can be a challenge.)

This might not be just one of those honey do things the previous owner did not get to do.

Or a much better two man job...
