Question

protection for PT ledger on the side of a shed

i would like to attach a 2x6 horizontal ledger on the side of my shed for hooks for hanging heavier items (e.g. i have kayaks etc.) that i would not feel comfortable having suspended just on something that goes through the siding. i would attach it before siding and right on top of the sheathing or perhaps the housewrap and would go a foot or a little more under the soffit so it wouldn't be exposed to much of h2o.

Q1: do i still need to protect the upside of the ledger with asphalt membrane and aluminum flashing like i did for my deck ledger ?

Q2: can there be housewrap between it and the sheathing, since it is thin, or should the 2x6 directly be touching the sheathing, i.e. cut out an opening in the housewrap before hanging it ?

thanks

there will be (so not yet) tapered cedar siding, 5x8 (on the thick side) by 8" wide

I'd just bolt the ledger to the wall with spacers behind it to allow for air circulation.

There is no exposed sheathing. You completely side the wall and then install the ledger.

Amakarevic, another thing that you might consider, rather than hanging your kayaks on the actual side of the shed, is to set a couple of treated posts along side of it, each with one, or two, or however many you would need, treated 2x4 or 2x6 cross pieces, so that you could still keep them close to the shed, but without having to worry about them damaging your cedar siding.

Attach the brackets through the siding into the studs? Seal around fasteners?

You can install blocking on the sheds interior, so you don't have to worry about hitting the studs. The hardware should be exterior rated and sealing it can't hurt.
