proper way to cut channel in a sheer wall.
 
There's a sheer wall between my den and bathroom. The plywood is on the den side. I'm running a new plug around the den to a perpendicular wall. What's the proper way to cut a channel in the sheer wall to run the wire?

You mean you want to install a duplex outlet? What is a sheer wall?

Well the proper way is to not cut into the shear panel at all.
Find another way to run the electrical.

Sorry You must have meant Shear Wall. Why would you have a Shear wall there? Why cut a channel? You could cut a hole for the outlet, but if it truly is a shear wall yo dont want to cut channels, IMHO.

Do you have access above or below to run this wire up or down and over?
Notch the wall and it's no longer a shear wall, and wires may be to close to the surface.

It's a condo. No way to run wires any other way. I want to cut a strip of plywood the length of the wall, run the wire through the studs, and then refasten the plywood strip. Would this not maintain the rigidity of the shear wall?

Yes, it would not maintain the integrity of the shear panel.

you possibly remove the entire panel noting the size and spacing of fasteners as well as thickness of sheathing. Run your electrical then replace with new equal panel and fasteners. of course the way it was constructed may not allow this.

you could bring in a professional engineer and have them design a replacement for your situation.

AndyG is right; if it is a shear wall, and you cut a strip of ply out of the face - no matter how narrow - it will lose its lateral stiffness.
It would be OK to cut a small hole for a socket.

You can at most cut a 4"x4" hole in that wall. If you cut a strip, you loose effect of that wall.

It helps to have your location in your profile. I'm guessing that your in California...

One option...cut the wall at least 24" up....pull out the entire lower section....do what you need to do...but before you put back the panel, you will have to install blocking between the studs centered on the cut. If the Shear (braced) wall is more than an A, then you will need 3x blocking (It's just easier to use 4x4's). When you put back the section, use the proper edge nailing.

I know it sounds drastic....but it's actually pretty easy to do once you make the leap....and one advantage of pulling off a large section....plenty of room to work.

I find that it's actually easier to make a big hole vs small hole....and I think it's easier to patch a big hole vs small.

Ok I don't have time to do all of that. I'm going to cut out a strip from the bathroom side. Before I start, is there any way that both sides of the framing are sheathed? This is an interior wall within one suite. I'm in Vancouver, Canada, and the building was built in 1999.

there is that possibility, however typically only one side is sheathed. If they needed more shear resistance and they were limited to this wall that could have gotten an increase in resistance by sheathing both sides of the wall.

If it's a shear wall, it could be that both sides are sheathed.

One of the walls in my addition is a 2C....in other words....I have Struct 1 OSB on both sides....3x6 sill plate....A35 Shear ties on the top plate every 7"...edge nailing is 3" staggered....and you should see the anchor bolts and hold downs....HD12's with 1" bolts 36" long (deep). That b!tch is not going anywhere....the existing house could fall off into the ocean and that wall (and a few others) will still be there....standing up proudly...
