Problem with bricks in fireplace box pulling away from interior wall
Not sure how to describe this better. It seems that the bricks inside the wood-burning fireplace are pulling away from the interior wall. There's no mortar/grout in between some of those bricks. This house was built in the 1950s. Is this something that I should be able to tackle on my own? I guess I could apply mortar/grout, but then will that keep the bricks in place? Or should this be done by a professional---maybe a mason?

Best to have a mason come in and fix it. If you do try and fix it yourself you need to use fire clay, not a standard mortar. The fire brick are supposed to be very close together. Generally there is a very small amount of fireclay separating them.
