Bit of advice/experience needed regarding artexed ceiling/associated coving.
I've already established that I can't be bothered attempting the whole operation myself because it looks like a bit of work is needed on the surface of the ceiling - a few cracks in places.
I wondered if anyone had any ideas about how much it might cost (the room is about 4-5m square) and more importantly what sort of tradesman it would be who would do this.
Also, how clean does the ceiling need to be? - I've just removed a layer of polystyrene tiles and several layers of paper and it's proving very difficult to get right down to plaster level. Is it OK to leave it a bit mucky or is a perfect surface for artex needed?
TO HAVE YOUR CEILING TEXTURED IT DOES NEED TO BE AS CLEAN AND DEBRIS FREE AS POSSIBLE, THAT INCLUDES ANY LOOSE PAINT AND FLAKING & DUST/POWDER, ALSO IF THERE ARE ANY LOOSE TAPES THAT WERE USED PREVIOUSLY FOR THE CRACKS/JOINTS PULL THESE OFF,
ONCE THE TEXTURE GUY OR LADY ARRIVES, IF THE CEILING IS CLEAN AND THEY DONT HAVE TO DO IT IT SHOULD COST LESS
CALL TEXTURE'ERS OUT TO GIVE YOU A PRICE BUT MAKE SURE HE DOESNT CHARGE YOU FOR THIS PRIVILAGE (OR HAVE A GO AT TEXTURING YOURSELF)
THE CEILING WILL FIRST BE SEALED, PROBABLY TWO COATS TO TAKE AWAY THE POROUSNESS, WHICH HELPS THE TEXTURE TO STICK, THEN THEY SHOULD TAPE UP ANY CRACKS, USING A STICKY FIBRE TAPE, (IT USED TO BE A BROWN OR WHITE PERFORATED TAPE THAT WAS USED), CAULKING OVER THIS (FILLING OUT/FEATHERING THE EDGES) WITH A STIFF MIX OF TEXTURE, THEN FINALLY ONCE THE CAULKING HAS GONE OFF SLIGHTLY THE TEXTURING CAN BE DONE, BUT IT WOULD REALLY BE NICE TO MAKE SURE THAT THE CENTRAL HEATING AND HOT WATER IS OFF AS THERE ARE HOT PIPES LURKING BENEATH THE CEILINGS AND IT WILL DRY TOO QUICKLY
