Pouring concrete over garage concrete floor
I want to raise my garage floor 4". The old (1930) floor has a few cracks but is fairly level.

the best method's an unbonded overlay,,, be certain to reference any jnts as they'll probably reflect upward,,, your jnt pattern & its timing's critical to prevent random cracking.

What is an unbonded overlay, a polymer film? What do you by referencing jnts? And what do you mean by "jnt pattern and timing"?

>>> Joint pattern and timing
If you are pouring the new layer of concrete a section at a time.

>>> unbonded overlay
A coating of asphalt or other cushioning is painted over the old concrete before the new layer is poured. This allows some give if the cracked pieces below should move slightly.

If the existing cracked floor has become uneven in level at all, then it is hard to say whether additional settling may continue unevenly resulting in cracking of the new layer.

In some instances you may be advised to pour the new layer in sections with boundaries that line up with the cracks in the old concrete, or to use mesh reinforcement for a one piece pour.

Would that be wire or rebar?

mesh won't prevent random cracking & ONLY adds strength to conc when its in tension (green),,, after curing, mesh only holds the broken pieces together,,, rebar adds strength minimally during the tension stage however it does add flexural strength after curing,,, that's why you see more steel in bridge decks than driveways & residential floors.

w/o actually seeing the existing floor, i can't suggest however, based on your post, it was the most logical solution to me so apologies if the previous replay seemed cryptic - thought most who'd ask about an overlay knew conc basics,,, suggest you hire this out.
