post and pier cladding

Just bought a forclosure and previous owner had covered up foundation with dirt. We found out that part of the house, circa 1912, doesnt have a concrete foundation, only post and pier. I see dirt and rubble on the outer perimeter of about 28 feet in length. Should I remove this and put some sort of cladding in so critters cant get underneath the house? What should I do/use?

post and pier cladding

i've dealt with this scenario a few times.

what i've done is the following:

frame a simple skirting wall with PT 2X between posts and PT plywood. staple up 30# felt paper, then nail up metal lath, and run hardware cloth a foot or so down into the ground.

then you stucco the exterior. it winds up looking just like a real foundation, keeps the critters out, and can be insulated from the interior.

pretty quick and easy, too.
if and when you get to the stucco, i can walk you through it. pretty simple.
