post next to inground pool

I would like to build a outdoor deck coming off my bedroom that over looks our in ground swimming pool. I tore down the old deck. The post(3) in the old deck were about 6 inches from the side of the pool-post in cement slab. My contracter wants to dig post 18 inches deep 12 inches from pool but is worried about the stability of the wall of the pool and the cement decking(that overhanges the poolabout 1 inch). I need to put 1 post next to the pool and one away from the pool that will support the deck. The post next to the pool would need to go into a slab of cemet about 6 feet wide bewteen the house and the pool. How close can I put a post in next to the pool, should I put one on top of the old post? dig a new hole with support or something else? thanks

I don't know if the deck would be too high but if you could do a drop girder and cantilever you could set your post back a good ways from the pool. Just a thought.
