Possible to splice multiple pieces of rebar?

Is it possible to splice together multiple smaller pieces of rebar into one larger piece?

My goal is to use as many reclaimed materials and possible and I've collected many smaller rebar pieces

Yes, and it's extremely common & acceptable to do so.

The lap is subjective, and you'll get opinions of anywhere between 12-40+ times the rod diameter. Personally, I like to use 16X most of the time, meaning 1/2" rod X 16 = 8" minimal lap.

Thanks for the replies

So would it be sufficient to use wire ties to attach two or is welding or other stronger mechanical connection necessary?

You have not indicated the purpose of the rebar. If you are simply reinforcing concrete, wire ties are fine. Welding is also acceptable, but much more difficult therefore less common. If you are doing something other than reinforcing concrete, you need to tell us what that is, and then revisit the question.

Welding is not a good option. It will weld, but it is not really an acceptable construction practice to weld mild steel rebar. If I saw someone do that I'd instantly require an engineer to sign it off. The proper method is to lap the bars with at least two wire ties per splice. The required overlap varies from place to place and also based on the structural conditions. 32 bar diameters is pretty much the minimum around here.....Check with your inspector regarding minimum lap where you live.

Since you live in the land of earthquakes I'd be willing to bet that the rebar splice requirements in your area are pretty restrictive.
