Possible to build a pergola on top of a deck?

Pergola is going to be at least 10 X 6 plus maybe a additional foot or 2 on each side.

The deck is already built and I'm thinking it would be a huge pain to take up deck apart to dig holes for the posts.

Is it possible to just build the pergola to sit on top of the decking boards. Secure it with those post anchors? I fear this may have too much sway side to side, what does everyone think?

Couple of ways I've also thought of doing it.

1. using those concrete footings that sit on top of the ground and let the pergola "float" up and down.
2. Securing it to the joists underneth the decking. This doesn't seem like it would be very secure though?

Please help!

How about a picture of your deck.

Anything is possible......Yup...pics & info would help

Where are you located ?
How big is the deck ?
How is it built, wood sizes, beams, decking ?
How many posts holding it up ?
Attached to house ?
How far off the ground is the deck ?
How tall will you build the pergola ?
Will it have open sides, walls, screens, benches..windows ?

"10x6 plus a foot or 2 on each side"
What do you mean by this ?

Where are you located ? Ohio
How big is the deck ? 20' X 16'
How is it built, wood sizes, beams, decking. 2 X 10 joists, centered 16" on center if I remember right. Everything is pressure treated pine.
How many posts holding it up ? 3 on the end opposite of the house
Attached to house ? yes
How far off the ground is the deck ? only about a foot or so
How tall will you build the pergola ? haven't decided, 10 foot maybe?
Will it have open sides, walls, screens, benches..windows ? All open, no benches or anything

What do you mean by this ? I took measurements last night. Thinking more like 12' X 6' would fit better. I ment to say possible a couple of feet bigger.

Will try to take pictures tonights. I'm thinking it might be possible, positioning the posts over top of the joist.
