porch swing support
Hi
I am planning a new front porch addition and want to include a porch swing. It will be a shed roof with ceiling attached to the 2x6 rafters, 16"oc. What extra support needs to be added for a ceiling mounted porch swing? It would need to support 3-5 hunderd pounds just to be on the safe side. Any suggestions appreciated. |

Since it's not built yet I'd tipple up the joist in that area. Drill a hole through the center joist and use 1/2 threaded rod in the hole with a fender washer and double nuts, then use an eye like this on the bottom side once the ceilings in place.

Sorry, I should have asked this at the same time as the Span.
Do you know the pitch of the roof? Are you in an area that gets snow? If so, do you know the snow load for your area? Very critical that your rafters are correctly designed. Will the eave end of the rafter be supported by a wall or beam? Are you planning on finishing the ceiling of the porch and will it be flat or follow the slop of the roof? |

pitch 5/12, occasional snow, rafters to be supported by triple 2X6 beam in simson truss hangers (span 8' between posts) ...the ceiling will follow the slope of the roof...Not sure of snow load but my neighbor has the same set up (that's where I got the idea) and his has been standing there for the past 25 years...my main concern is water and wind...prone to tornados in this area and high winds...I was wondering about hurricane ties on the rafters as well as the joists??
