Polyurathane or silicon caulk outside?

When you have a protrusion going outside and something like a pipe going through it, is it better to use polyurathane caulk or silicone caulk? I've seen some inspection reports balk at silcone caulk outside on pipe protusions to fill the gap between them and the wall / siding, what is correct or generally preferred?

Silicone can't be painted well. I'd use Great Stuff if the gap is not huge, trim it, and paint it (several coats will be necessary), or a paintable caulk.

Depends on how big the gap is on how to fix it.

I'm just talking the little gap between a pipe and siding, say a 3" pipe went out and you cut 3.6" to get it through since the PVC pipes outer diameter is 3.5" you'd have that 1/10th an inch for water to seep back in or air to infiltrate back in

Any time a pipe goes through vinyl siding there should have been a siding block for it to go through.
(you did not mention what type siding you have)
I'd just use Alex 230, it's work for me for many years, we go through at least a case a week.

This house has just plain old vinyal siding, none of the pipes had anything put around them they just drilled through and ran the pipes through, only thing with J blocks around it was the electrical outlets
